Athanasius Kircher

Athanasius Kircher wrote Oedipus Aegyptiacus (Rome, 1652), a very scholarly tome full of lore, with quotes from many ancient authorities.

He included passages from three authors who may have influenced Coleridge through these excerpts--

  • Moses Bar Cepha, Arab geographer (author of Geographica Arabica Medicca)

  • P. Peter Pais (explorer, author, and mapmaker)

  • Odoardus Lopez Lusitanus (another explorer, who left a commentary)
