William Bartram: 1. The Serpentine Rivulet
Here we see a little creek wandering through a meadow, curving like a snake. Much has been omitted, replaced with Lowes' ellipses. What is left is a little like a banana leaf cut down by a machete, and left in the trail--a hint of the living text, but not enough to let us envision the whole.
Text The dew-drops twinkle and play…on the tips of the lucid, green savanna,
sparkling…(beside)…a serpentine rivulet, meandering over the meadows.
